In her junior year of college my daughter ended up caring for a cat who had been viewed as a disposable toy by her original owner. By her senior year, in order to save money, Hannah leased an apartment that didn’t allow pets. So Cora, the cat, came to live with us. We had all been led to believe that the cat came from an animal shelter and had been spayed.
Two days ago she gave birth to three kittens in my laundry room. I thought she had just put on winter weight and actually put her on a diet. What a complete shock to discover mewling kittens.
Once again, animals are my teachers. Never underestimate the power of the mother. It fascinated me to watch Cora giving birth. She purred, seeming so content to allow life to pass through her body and out into the world. She may have started out as an plaything, but she has evolved into a Mama Cat.
Cora’s motherhood came as such a surprise. In this world of creation, often those long days of gestation, we see as unhealthy stagnation can lead to the sudden shock of true transformation. The transformation, in this case is the making of a Mama and the new life for three kittens, pretty cute ones, who will bring joy to their new homes.
I will be delighted when Cora returns to live with Hannah, which will happen when the time is right. Within thirty hours of their births, all of the kitties are spoken for and will go to good homes. I am a dog person, so this is happy news. Now if it had been puppies, the lesson would be more about letting go…
