I did it! I picked up a dead mouse. Gross, yes, I know. Forgive the disgusting subject. But this is pretty exciting for me! I have my therapist, Laura Huss, to thank! I met Laura in Virginia Beach at the Master Certification course at the A.R.E..
Before I tell you about the mouse, let me tell you about meeting Laura. She sat next to me the first full day of the class. “I wanted to introduce myself,” she said to me. “First of all, I have the same sweater you wore last night,” she smiled. We’d had an orientation the evening before, which included going around the room one at a time, standing and talking about where we were from and our professional background. I’d said that I’d grown up in North Dakota and Laura informed me that she, too, had grown up in that lightly populated, mostly forgotten place. She now lived near Virginia Beach, but as is typical of military families, they had moved quite a bit in the past 20 years and had another five years of moves before her husband retired.
Then she mentioned that she and her husband had decided to buy a home now in preparation for his retirement. They would close on the house during the week of our classes and it was in Minnesota somewhere, the state where I live. She had never been to see the house or the town; only her husband had been there. Then she told me the name of the lake where this house was located. I laughed. “That’s about 17 miles from me,” I told her. The more we talked, the more we connected. She had worried about moving to a place where people were not so open to alternative ways of thinking about spirituality. To appease her, Laura’s husband had given her a flyer for Brigid’s House, Center for Mind, Body and Spirit. “That’s where I practice,” I said.
She looked at me strangely and then asked if I had a link from Brigid’s House to my website and if I wrote a blog? “I know all about you!” she said. “I’ve read your blog.”
I was able to tell her stories about the people who owned the house she was buying, and about her realtor. I know them all and it is a small town.
“I think we were suppose to meet,” she said.
During the week of training, we had to come up with a fear or phobia to work on with our partners. Laura and I teamed up right away. I told her about how even thinking about mice made my insides go all squeamish. Looking at a mouse put me into tears. The closest I’ve ever come to wanting to divorce my beloved was after he chased a mouse around our living room with a broom, then, when he had been unsuccessful at ferreting it out, handed me the broom and said he needed to get back to work and I should handle it. “He was no longer my protector!” I whined.
Laura regressed me back to pre-teen years; back to where my subconscious mind knew the origin of the problem lay. I won’t go into the sad details, but suffice it to say that it involved a pet hamster and the hamster did not come out very well. Laura had me retell the story of the hamster three times while in the trance state, each time seeing more details. Each time, the energy and emotion of the incident lessened.
After our session, I brought to my mind thoughts of mice. Really yucky thoughts, like the fact that mice have no bladders and so as they run over your kitchen counters they are leaving trails of invisible mouse urine. No squeamish stomach. I’m cured, I thought.
But the real test didn’t come until two days ago when the dogs and the cat ganged up on a mouse hiding in a bookshelf. Eventually the poor creature lost out and I found it on the hearthrug. I could actually look at it. Then with a rubber glove (not wanting to invite the black plague mind you), I picked it up by the tail and carried it outside where I flung it far into the woods. No troubles. Cured. A miracle.
When husband Keith came home, I told him to guess what I’d done that morning. “Something you have never known me to do in the twenty six years we’ve been together.” He could not guess.
Thank you, Laura! She is coming to Park Rapids this month for the holiday and we have a coffee date. I can’t wait! Her clients are very lucky to have her!
